Joe Johnson is expected to sign with the Miami Heat after clearing waivers Saturday 5 p.m. ET . The 34-year-old , 7x NBA All-Star, was recently bought out by the Brooklyn Nets. Johnson was in the final year of his whopping six-year , $124 million contract, where he was set to make $24 million. The services of “Iso Joe” have been courted by the Atlanta Hawks , as well as Lebron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Does this addition to the Miami roster make them a serious contender in the Eastern Conference? Miami entered the year favored by many to challenge the Cavaliers in the East, as they currently sit in fourth place. The Heat have experienced various injuries and disruptions to their team chemistry, highlighted by the unfortunate health issues of perennial star Chris Bosh. Dwayne Wade has shown his usual flashes of brilliance, along with young rising star Hassan Whiteside. As Miami looks to close the gap in the conference standings and prepare for a playoff run, the addition of a proven veteran could surely  help to put them over the hump.

Although Johnson is towards the back end of his career, his scoring prowess and experience with taking big shots during crunch time would prove to be a value for any team in the quest for a championship. His career average of 17 points a game is no fluke, and will look to come up big after taking his talents to South Beach.
